Jose M. "Joe" Sangroniz

Jose M. “Joe” Sangroniz was born in Bilbao, Bizkaia on August 5, 1928.  He came to the US in the 1950s and found work at the Idaho Power Company where he was employed until June of 1964.  Joe then left Boise and moved to the Portland area where he worked for Pacific Power and Light Co. until his death Nov. 3, 1984 at the age of 56.

The 1950s and 1960s were active times in the Basque community of Boise as the Basque Center was built, the Oinkari Basque Dancers were formed, and Basque dances occurred annually in Boise and in surrounding towns.  Joe joined in and would play the tambourine for various musicians at various gatherings in the community. He was also a good player with spoons.

Joe Sangroniz’ lively manner and exuberant playing style on the pandareta can be seen in both still photos and in his musician role in the Disney movie, Greta the Misfit Greyhound.
